‘Japan’s Beethoven’ hears his critics

THE man once lauded as Japan’s Beethoven has said that he can partially hear in a new disclosure following the stunning revelation last week that his Hiroshima symphony and other famed musical compositions were ghostwritten.

Despite astonishment and outrage to the ghostwriting scandal, music credited to Mamoru Samuragochi is surging in sales. Hiroshima was No. 1 in classical CD sales in the latest Oricon weekly ranking and surged to No. 27 overall in Japan, selling more than 2000 copies over the past week. His label has said it will stop sales.
In his eight-page handwritten statement, released to the Japanese media through his lawyer, Samuragochi said he had regained part of his hearing three years ago. He apologised for the scandal and for failing to explain to his fans sooner.
The scandal erupted last week when his ghostwriter revealed he wrote music credited to Samuragochi for 18 years.
“(My hearing) has recovered to the level I can catch words when someone speaks close to my ear clearly and slowly, although it still sounds a bit muffled and distorted,” Samuragochi wrote. His hearing is more impaired when his physical condition isn’t good, he said. He stood by his identity as a Hiroshima native and his parents were survivors of the 1945 US atomic bombing.
Samuragochi, 50, confessed to the collaboration the day before a tabloid magazine published an interview with the ghostwriter. Takashi Niigaki, a 43-year-old lecturer at a music college, said he has believed all along his partner could hear, given the way the pair discussed his compositions. Samuragochi has said in his biography that he had completely lost his hearing in both ears at age 35, but no clear explanation of how it occurred has been given.
He is classified as having severe hearing loss and has a certificate for his disability, by which he is entitled to health benefits. He said he wouldn’t mind taking a hearing test, and would return the certificate if the results prove otherwise.
Niigaki said he couldn’t keep the secret knowing Olympic figure skater Daisuke Takahashi was set to use the Samuragochi arrangement Sonatina for Violin for his short program at the Sochi Games.

Idina Menzel Joins Oscar Night Roster with “Let It Go”

With the overwhelming success of “Frozen,” ‘moviegoers have fallen in love with the film’s soundtrack, especially the main theme “Let It Go.”
And now, actress Idina Menzel has agreed to perform the track at the 86th Academy Awards, where it’s also nominated for Best Original Song.

“Let It Go” was written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and it will compete against “Happy” (Despicable Me 2), “Ordinary Love” (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) and “The Moon Song” (Her).
Meanwhile, Ms. Menzel is no stranger to the stage as she scored a Tony Award for “Wicked” and another nomination for her work on the original cast of “Rent.”

Former Hollywood child star Shirley Temple has died at the age of 85.

A talented singer, dancer and actress, Shirley Temple was America's top box-office draw from 1935, the year she turned 7  until 1938. She was credited with helping save 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy with films such as "Curly Top" and "The Littlest Rebel"  "The Bright Eyes", "Stand Up and Cheer"

After retiring from films in 1950 at the age of 21, Temple returned to the public eye as a Republican candidate for Congress and as a US diplomat. She raised a family and later became active in politics and held several diplomatic posts in Republican administrations, including ambassador to Czechoslovakia during the historic collapse of communism in 1989.
She died on Monday at home in Woodside, California, from natural causes. "She was surrounded by her family and caregivers," a statement said.
The family statement continued: "We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and most importantly as our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and adored wife for 55 years of the late and much missed Charles Alden Black."

Nancy Motes, half sister of Julia Roberts, has died of an apparent drug overdose. She was 37.
"It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Motes ... confirms that she was found dead in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose,"  "There is no official report from the Coroner's office yet. The family is both shocked and devastated."
Nancy Motes was the youngest sister of Julia and brother Eric Roberts, and the aunt of actress Emma Roberts.
In the wake of the tragic news, Julia, who is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her work in August: Osage County, has pulled out of today's Oscars luncheon to be with family.
Nancy Motes had worked as a production assistant on Glee, and was planning on marrying her fiancé, John Dilbeck, in May.

Jennifer Aniston Signs On For “Cake”

She’s never had a lack of interesting projects and Jennifer Aniston has yet another intriguing role in the forthcoming flick “Cake.”
According to a report, the “Rumor Has It” actress will play a “chronic pain sufferer who is obsessed with an acquaintance’s suicide.”

Furthermore, Jen’s character “discovers the details of a woman’s suicide and strikes up a relationship the widower” in the Black List script written by Patrick Tobin.
Aniston will also serve as an executive producer on the film, directed by Daniel Barnz and produced by Ben Barnz, Kristin Hahn and Courtney Solomon.
