AUSTRALIA’S favourite album of 2013 was a Pink album released in 2012.
Pink’s
The Truth About Love has now been Australia’s highest-selling album for two years straight – an ARIA first.
The album has sold 560,000 copies in Australia, with around 200,000
of those sold last year, marking the high point of a year of overall low
album sales.
Pink’s album spent four weeks at No. 1 this week and 35 weeks in the Top 10. It never left the Top 40.
Her popularity is so great in Australia she has had an album at
either No.1 or No.2 in six out of the last seven ARIA end of year album
charts. She also scored the year’s highest-selling music DVD with her
The Truth About Love concert, filmed in Melbourne.

2013′s second biggest seller is Katy Perry’s
Prism, which sold 179,000 copies in ten weeks.
Despite being released just six weeks ago, One Direction’s
Midnight Memories is the year’s No. 6 album with around 120,000 copies sold.
One Direction, who toured Australia this year also had lots of fans buying their album.

In even faster work Beyonce’s self-titled album, released the week
before Christmas, sold enough to be the 23rd highest seller of the year.

Michael Buble had two titles in the year’s list of Australia’s Top 10 most popular albums – his 2013 release
To Be Loved at No.5 and his 2011 favourite
Christmas at No.7.

Tellingly the most popular Australian albums of last year were
reissues (The 12th Man) or covers albums (Human Nature, Dami Im, Taylor
Henderson and Harrison Craig).
X Factor won the battle of album sales over The Voice when it came to covers albums.
Despite being rush-released for Christmas X Factor winner Dami Im
made No. 17 on around 78,000 sales and runner-up Taylor Henderson No. 20
on 74,000 sales. Voice winner Harrison Craig made No.22.

Karise Eden made No.6 in the 2012 end of year album chart.
The biggest-selling original Australian album released in 2013 was Russell Morris’
Sharkmouth, at No. 33, which has sold steadily all year despite little radio support.
The album peaked at No.6, his first Top 10 placing, and won an ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots release.
It has sold over 70,000 copies this year and was recently reissued with a DVD on the making of the album.

“Sharkmouth is the story of the year,” Paul Cashmere of music website
Noise11 says. “It succeeded with no hype and with no commercial
airplay, Russell toured continuously and performed the songs live.
Sharkmouth was unique, an Australian blues album about real characters
from the past. It sold because it was a quality record in a year that
lacked quality releases.”
27 Australian acts made the year’s 100 best selling albums including
Bliss N Eso (No.34), Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Harvey (No.35), Birds of
Tokyo (No.37) and Tina Arena (No.39).
Surprisingly low placings were had by Lady Gaga’s
ArtPop (No.72), Kings of Leon’s
Mechanical Bull (No.80) and Miley Cyrus’
Bangerz at No.64.
Katy Perry’s
Roar was the No. 1 single in Australia last year,
after spending nine weeks at No. 1 – the longest run on top this year
and selling over 560,000 copies.
No Australian single made the Top 10 sellers of 2013; the highest local was Melbourne’s
Vance Joy at No.12 with Riptide.

Only 13 Australian tracks were among the Top 100 sellers in Australia
last year, including Birds of Tokyo’s Lanterns (No.27) and Matt Corby’s
Resolution at No.39.
Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke was 2013′s second-highest seller, with
Passenger’s Let Her Go, Avicii’s Wake Me Up and Lorde’s Royals making up
the Top 5.

Harlem Shake by Baaeur made No.1 on the weekly ARIA chart but only No.61 on the year-end list.
Jason DeRulo had the most singles in the chart, with four tracks lodged in the Top 100 –
Talk Dirty, The Other Side, Trumpets and
Marry Me.
However his success failed to translate into album sales, with his album
Tattoos only the year’s 85th highest seller, despite peaking at No. 5 upon release.
